Holidays gift: Japanese language support

The team of Logical Objects is constantly working to improve and expand the potential of LogicalDOC software and also this month has produced a new release that fixes some issues reported on some installations of our customers and partners.

As usual, the problems are not so simple to solve as they can occur under specific conditions or specific installations related to the number of users or groups rather than on the operating system and antivirus configuration.

However, it is with live and vibrant satisfaction that we announce the release of version 6.3.2 of LogicalDOC

It is mainly a bugfix release, although there are some new features for multiple language support.

The LogicalDOC announced to all Microsoft^© Office^© the availability of the LogicalDOC Office Add-In that will allow among the other things to:

Browse folders and open a document directly from Office
Perform chec-out/check-in operations
Store opened files directly into LogicalDOC

LogicalDOC is integrated into Office with an Addin you can install into your PC.
Once installed you will be able to open office document stored in LogicalDOC directly in your Office application.
Of course LogicalDOC will take care of the versioning and check-out/check-in operations.

Released LogicalDOC Outlook AddIn v1.0

The version 1.0 of the LogicalDOC Outlook AddIn is now available!

Today, many commercial and operational communications transit to and from organizations via email.
To improve the knowledge of these informations and business processes is necessary to make these informations available so they are accessible and usable without having to rewrite or duplicate each time.

Using this plugin you can store your emails in logicaldoc for sharing and make the informations contained in them more accessible via the logicaldoc full-text search future.

Emails are saved in the original Outlook .msg format, so you can then download them from logicaldoc and view them in Outlook, attachments are also saved along with the email.

The second feature of the plugin is to save the attachments.
In some cases, in fact the relevant information is not the mail, but in the documents it carries.
Therefore it is unnecessary to save the whole email, while it is very useful the possibility to save the associated files.

The last feature in this first release is the ability to select directly from LogicalDOC, thanks to a simple function of browsing, one or more documents to be attached to an outgoing email.
This way you can send documents directly from Outlook, without having to access in advance and download documents locally.

LogicalDOC Outlook Addin is an optional plug-in available for the commercial editions of the software starting from version 6.0.2

Why we choose GWT

LogicalDOC moved from a traditional user interface based on scripting technology like JSP/JSF to the modern and powerful GWT framework coming from Google. Up to now, we are proud to offer the Document Management System with the more advanced user interface available today.

This new approach allowed us to drastically reduce the code for the presentation layer and limit the knowledge needed to develop, since we dropped a lot of complex enterprise technologies to start to develop in pure Java language.

When the experience counts

It doesn't matter how good is your product, the only thing your users will look is the user interface. After all each electronic artifact exists to serve human people business processes. So the way in which your users interact with your system is the most important aspect and you have to take care about your users experience.

A graphical user interface based on GWT (Google Web Toolkit) technologies will assure you these following goals:

High response times, since all the GUI is executed in the client side
High experience, equal to a traditional desktop systems
Compatibility with all used browsers

The best thing that GWT will do for you is to completely decouple the presentation layer (completely executed in the client) from the business and data layers (completely executed in the server)

GWT role in an Enterprise Application

Approaching the development of an enterprise-class application like LogicalDOC, involves the development of a large number of similar widget and forms for data manipulation. These elements are presentation layer components, and here are two general approaches to develop them:

Creating of separate classes which represents visual component for each form.
Creating universal visual components and widgets that can be composed together

If you try to follow the first way you probably will have a lot of code to produce and a lot of development time. You may agree that the correct approach is the first one and GWT simply adopts the Object Oriented paradigm allowing you to reuse components and take benefit from concept like inheritance and polymorphism.

So when building a user interface with GWT, it is possible to use generic components, significantly reducing the resources for the development of the presentation layer. In addition since GWT is pure Java you will not be required to use senior development resources, you just develop in standard Java.

Logical Objects is pleased to announce that from Friday 02/11/2011 is available on Google Marketplace the LogicalDOC App in version 1.0.

This application allows you to connect to a remote LogicalDOC 6.0 and via Web-services perform full-text search on the repository of documents, to view the results of a search (including snippets of text) and to download the document on your smart-phone or Android tablet.

The application works with both LogicalDOC CE (Community Edition) and the Commercial editions of software.

2 lines about the New Graphic

For the 5.0 release of LogicalDOC we thought it was appropriate to do a restyling of the Web interface.
In particular we wish to give to the program a more modern design to communicate an image more professional and the strength of the solution.

Following this path we have taken action to change the head of the program by entering a dark-blue color to separate from the more operational section below, by including however, a varied background pattern to communicate a sense of modernity and speed.

As regards the menus we have redefined the head menus by removing the icons to give more uniformity to the whole and in consequence of this choice also contextual menus on documents have undergone the same treatment.

In a article appeared on a Polish blog our system was at fault in relation to others regarding the ergonomics of use.
To improve this aspect we have taken action on three fronts:
introduction of the navigation tree on folders, repositioning of the breadcrumb, restyling of the buttons.

Thanks to the navigation tree is much faster to move between folders, the repositioning of the breadcrumb in turn facilitates the user to understand its exact location within the repository, while the new style of the buttons enhances their visibility and usability.

We are very satisfied of the result obtained because our customers have appreciated this renovation and they informed us spontaneously that the new interface was more pleasant and functional than the last.

In the future we already have other innovations to further improve the GUI of LogicalDOC, one of which will be the contextual menu on folders.
This improvement will allow even easier access to functions on the folder, similar to the contextual menu on the documents.

LogicalDOC 5.0 Released

Logical Objects is pleased to announce the new release 5.0 of the popular LogicalDOC DMS. This new release represents a milestone in the product evolution.

LogicalDOC 5.0 comes with a complete and powerful Workflow, with this feature you can visually design your processes directly inside the browser without external editors. This workflow comprises an escalation management that allows you to define tasks lenghts and recurring warning messages to involved users.

Another important update regards the auditing, now users can register themselves to be notified about changes of single documents or entire folders, and this via e-mail or RSS.

With the recently released version 5.0, LogicalDOC adopts MySQL as reference database.
The decision was taken in compliance with a lot of performance tests and MySQL was the right solution to obtain good speed performances on huge amounts of documents.

What's new in LogicalDOC 4.5.2

Among the already mentioned improvements in the parsers of which we have previously given notice, in the new release there is an interesting update.

This is a new importer for ZIP compressed archives.

This importer, which is the class InMemoryZipImport, as its name suggest, is able to perform the import in memory of the documents in a compressed .zip archive.

This new importer replaces the previous one and is able to specify the encoding used for the names of directories and files in the archive.
This allows LogicalDOC to read correctly, with the right encoding, also archives created in format different than Unicode.

Also allows to overtake some limitations related to the extraction on the file system of those archives that contain characters not supported by the Operating System on which LogicalDOC is installed.

Another update that i find relevant is the one made on the translations.

In fact, thanks to the work of Sebastian Wenzky (krypthonas.de) and Jesús Marín (A.P.L. software) we have updated the translations of the software for German and Spanish.

After the release of LogicalDOC EE 4.5 our partners have reported a small problem during the automatic extraction of Tags on particular types of documents.
In fact, we checked that extracting tags from OpenOffice documents the accented letters (found in most Latin languages) were eliminated.
At this point our development team was activated to resolve the problem and to review the various parsers / extractors of LogicalDOC to extract text from documents in the best possible way and in accordance with the UTF-8.
In this way the texts are then indexed by LogicalDOC and the document archive is full-text searchable.

The Community Edition of LogicalDOC owns the parser for Microsoft Office 2003 applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), AbiWord, AbiWord compressed (.zabw files), OpenOffice 2.3/3.0, StarOffice, KOffice 1.6, HTML, XML, TXT, PDF, PS (PostScript), WordPerfect (versions 4, 5, 6).

The licensed version of LogicalDOC Enterprise as well as having the parser in the Open-Source release of the software is able to index the text content of Microsoft Office 2007 documents (.docx, .xslx, .pptx), Autocad DWG documents and is able to perform optical character recognition (OCR) in PDF files (PDF raster), TIFF (Multipage), JPG, PNG.

Our developers have been involved also to implement support for the extraction of the textual content of documents .eml (Thunderbird saved emails, MS Outlook Express, email forwards) and documents with .msg file extension (Microsoft Office Outlook 2007).
These new parser will be available for the next release of LogicalDOC Enterprise scheduled for next autumn.

New Translation Program for LogicalDOC

After about a year since the release of LogicalDOC 3.5 and after several intermediate versions a problem have started to emerge:
keeping aligned translations of LogicalDOC with the current version of the program.

At the same time we need to understand what was the status of alignment of a given translation respect to a particular release of LogicalDOC.
Also we had a third problem: how to simplify the translation process, so that even a
person with no particular knowledge of Java could participate in the process of localization, without having to install special software or IDE to work on a translation.

At this point we began to look around to find a solution to our problems.

The first Open-Sorce solution we found was NickelsWebtranslator, but still not particularly satisfied, because the interface was a bit woody and why there was the need to install a Python interpreter on our server.

Continuing our research we have evaluated the translation system offered by Launchpad.
In the end we chose the latter because it is easy to use, even a person without knowledge of programming and without special tools may work on a translation, allowing more players to work simultaneously on the same translation and speeds up the translation with good suggestions. Also this system allows to graphically view the percentage of completion of a translation.

There are also negative aspects, such as the need to convert the RB in input into Gettext format and returned files back to .properties, but this negative aspect is largely offset by the convenience of the translation platform of Launchpad - Rosetta.

On the wiki of LogicalDOC there is a page (Translate LogicalDOC) with detailed instructions to start working with the new platform for the translations.

LogicalDOC CE 4.5.1 available with Chinese and Greek support

The purpose of this 4.5.1 release is to improve the multilingual support provided by LogicalDOC.

In particular, after the creation of plugins to support Greek and Chinese languages, there was the need to treat properly the files with ideographic characters.

Not only that, it was necessary to make some changes to properly index the content of foreign documents and display correctly the snippets with search results.

Among other things the search by tag has been improved, allowing to manually enter the first character of the tag, useful for non-Latin alphabets.

A big thanks to Marinos Vlasakis for Greek translation and Tong Hongxian (Shanghai Electric) for translation in Chinese simplified.

How ICEFaces reduced by 35% our code

Hi to all,

i'm Alessandro Gasparini of Logical Objects.

Logical Objects is a small Italian company that develops software and web applications. At the end of 2006 we entered into an open-source project called Contineo. It was a monolithic web-based solution of a DMS (Document Management System). The system had its stratification used as a MVC framework: Struts 1.2.x.

After about a year (end of 2007) we realized that maintaining this solution when the whole world of web-applications was changing was not feasible, so we needed to decide what solution to go.

We decided for the JSF, because SUN specifics and in view of a greater JavaScript interactivity needed a framework JSF - AJAX.

In the end we opted for ICEfaces because the documentation was excellent, very exhaustive examples and stability / reliability of the system was certain. Even the solution became open-source so that thing greatly simplified its introduction in our project.

After several months of furious refactoring we released Contineo 3.0 and the code of our application was dropped by 30-35% compared to the Struts version.

Currently, our development team is working on LogicalDOC, the new open-source project of Logical Objects that is replacing the now dismissed Contineo.

LogicalDOC is released in two versions: LogicalDOC CE (Community Edition) and LogicalDOC Enterprise (commercially supported).
